The University of Technology was established in 1960 with the objective to prepare applied engineers as lab technicians in engineering projects and prepare technical educators to teach in both industrial and technical schools.
Shortly after its foundation, it became a high institute carrying the name of the High Industrial Institute. In 1967, it was renamed the College of Industrial Engineering (later College of Technological Engineering) and was associated with the University of Baghdad. In 1975, the College became independent and was established as the University of Technology. The University consists of 16 departments. Its mission is to prepare technically oriented engineers and scientific researchers.
