Sara Abbasnejad (born 1983) is a visual storyteller from Ahvaz in South-West Iran. She’s a self-trained photographer and multi-media artist whose projects are dedicated to women’s communities and their concerns. Exploring the concept of femininity and using the photographic medium as a means for witnessing and representing everyday lives of women in her community continues to be her way to resist the dominant order. Another main concern in her work are stereotypes around the image of Iranian and Muslim women in the Western, or Northern hemisphere and the existing representational tropes within the artworld when it comes to granting visibility and a voice to marginalized “others.” Abbasnejad is based in Oslo at the moment.
