The artist talk with Priscillia Kounkou Hoveyda from Collective for Black Iranians, Amirali Ghasemi from Parking Video Library, and Shokoufeh Eftekhar and Zolfar Hassib from Shur Collective, moderated by Hannah Jacobi, took place in the context of the screening program Other Colors on 04/07/24 at MAO Museo d’Arte Orientale, Turin.
Other Colors points to the ways in which color and color classifications have been used as a technique of Othering and exclusion throughout modernity and into the present. It looks at color as an expression of racism as well as empowerment, at the use of color in art as a tool for socio-political critique, and at the connection between color and human emotion.
The filmmakers and artists share insights into their showcased works and delve into the concepts, ideas, and inspirations behind the initiation of their collectives. They speak about thier personal experience of color, the discrimination embedded in it, and the internalized borders affecting human interactions. The discussion also explored how different forms of art—from moving images to narratives—can revolutionize the way we perceive the Other and Othering.
The screening and artist talk were comissioned by MAO Museo d’Arte Orientale, Turin, and first presented in the framework of the exhibition Tradu/izioni d’Eurasia Reloaded on 04/07/24 at MAO and online at www.mohit.art.
