Shababek for Contemporary Art, founded in 2009 in Gaza City, was a vital hub for Palestinian artists, offering workshops, residencies, and exhibitions. Located near Al-Shifa Hospital, it housed over 20,000 artworks, including 5,000 by co-founder Shareef Sarhan. In March 2024, the center was destroyed during an Israeli military operation, erasing a cornerstone of Gaza's cultural life. Despite this loss, Shababek's spirit endures through displaced artists who continue to create and inspire, embodying resilience amid adversity.
