The Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), founded in 1847, is Austria’s leading non-university research institution. Its mission is to promote science in every way, with a focus on fundamental research. The Academy runs 28 research institutes spanning humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, with over 1,600 staff.
